I saw that there are companies that offer these quite inexpensive one day tours from Cat Ba to Ha Long Bay - kayaking and etc. If you can find some cruises starting from Cat Ba, I’d advise you staying for one or two nights, doing a cruise and spending sometime on the island, especially if you fancy less touristic places. Taking a cruise from Cat Ba is a very similar experience to Ha Long bay, but less tourists and you don't see some of the caves. That's why, I'm thinking about alternatives - going to Cat Ba island and staying there for several nights or getting to Ha Long and exploring the city. Will be skipping Sapa due to heavy rainfall and my flight back home is going from Hanoi. Plus, it's less crowded and cheaper. I think technically that part near Cat Ba is not actually called Halong Bay, but it looks still absolutely stunning. A cheaper way to see Halong Bay is to get to Cat Ba island on your own (bus/ regular ferry or with a small boat), and then when on Cat Ba, take a day cruise on a boat out to Halong Bay. . You can get to cat ba from Haiphong, but if you leave from the Halong side the ferry ride is much nicer and you get to see the karsts. They took us far from the dirtier parts of the bay and we had a great day of biking and (pretty challenging) hiking, as well as a special kayaking and swimming experiences.
